The Mysterious Pentagram...
The Pentagram means different things to different people. Some may argue as to what it represents. The Pentagram, from a Christian and High Magic perspective right side up represents God or Spirit ruling over the world of matter. The 5 points represent the 5 places that Christ was wounded. This is why" Devils" or maleficent beings are afraid of it.
It also represents the microcosmic man with his arms stretched out. Let us not forget that it also represents the elements (water, air, earth, fire) and spirit.
Now there is also the upside-down Pentagram. It represents world of matter ruling over God or Spirit, 'Satan'. It is the same as denouncing God or placing material world above spirit. Generally it is worn by Satanists, thanks to Anton LeVey who poplarized it in the early 1960's along with the inverted Cross. Often members of the Temple Set land those who like to pretend that they are evil wear it is plain sight. Keep in mind Satanism and Satan worship are not the same. Those who are wishing power over evil to protect and ward wear the symbol right side up, or Spirit over Matter. And in some rare cases the right side down pentacle is used for banishing, but generally right side down donates material over spirit, or in leymans terms placing Spirit or God under oneself or worldly manifestations, which is the tenant of Satanism, now worshipping Satan, but rather the self.
Did you know that the pentagram was a Christian symbol? It was used on the shields of the Christian Army, until Constantine changed the symbol to a cross after a dream. In Europe many old headstones of monks, don the pentagram on them. It also represents the 5 wounds of Christ, known as the Druid's Foot.
Below is a Christian headstone in Europe with a pentacle.
As we can see, the association of the inverted Pentagram with Satan is not completely false. Satan could be defined as Material over Spirit.
The right side up Pentagram is a symbol of protection that we can see all around us, every look closely at a Police Badge? It is no coincidence that it is a Pentacle! A Pentagram encased in a circle. What is the one of the first symbols children learn to draw? A 5 point star! And what did the Wise men follow to find the new born Messiah? A Star, which his often depicted as a 5 pointed star with a long tail. Look at nature, often plants, fruits, and flowers have a pentagram as their center.
